Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers
Wet Chemical fire extinguishers carry a bright YELLOW label. They are designed for use in commercial kitchens where there is a risk of cooking oil and fat fires. They work by forming a layer of foam on the surface that starves the fire of oxygen.
Designed for Cooking Oils and Fats – Class F
Wet Chemical fire extinguishers are suitable for fires caused by:
- cooking oils
- cooking fats
- waste bins
- laboratories
Wet Chemical fire extinguishers can be used on Class A fires, but we recommended you have specific water fire extinguishers.
How Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers work
Wet Chemical fire extinguishers are filled with a solution of potassium acetate. They operate in the same two ways as foam extinguishers. Firstly, the solution is expelled as a fine mist which has a cooling effect on the surface of the burning liquid, reducing its temperature. The potassium reacts with the burning liquid to create a foam that prevents oxygen from reaching the flammable vapour. This ultimately extinguishes the fire by starving the fire of fuel.
