Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers
Dry powder extinguishers carry a BLUE label. They are widely known as the A-B-C extinguisher as they can be used on Class A, Class B and Class C fires – as well as on Class D and Electrical fires. Despite this versatility, they should not be used in enclosed spaces as the powder reduces visibility in the event of needing to escape and is harmful if inhaled, then afterwards its residue is difficult to clean up.

Dry powder fire extinguishers are suitable for fires caused by:
- butane
- methane
Dry powder fire extinguishers can also be used on:

- Class B – Flammable Liquid fires
- Class Electrical – Electrical Equipment fires up to 1,000 volts

How Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers work
Dry powder fire extinguishers are filled with a solution of sodium, potassium or monoammonium. This solution is expelled under pressure as a fine spray and blankets the fire with an inert non-flammable powder. This smothers the fire by creating a barrier to starve it of oxygen to extinguish the fire.
